When you have just finished creating your shiny new site or blog there may be a few little things that you may have missed out. Don’t worry they won’t stop your site from functioning, but just by applying these small finishing touches will keep your site working smarter.
The first thing to consider is domain names especially to protect your brand. Recently we have been victims of another person purchasing an alternative domain name that we overlooked when we originally set up webdesignmash.com and now a blog/ site with the same name exists and also claims to do the same as our blog. It is really infuriating because Web Design Mash is a registered name to us at Design Blend and for now we have halted any more proceedings on the matter. The best thing to do is purchase multiple domain names. Look at .com, .net, .info and your countries top level domain name and you can either forward the traffic to your main domain or use domain parking.
Adding a favicon will add your logo in the ID info section of the address bar and also when visitors bookmark your site your favicon will be displayed in your visitors list of bookmarks and will give your website a more finished and professional look.
What about customising those 404 pages? These are handy if any of your visitor’s mistypes one of the URLs on your site and it’s a great way to get them back on track with a link to the homepage.
Make any RSS and other subscription options buttons standout and make sure you allow browsers to easily discover any RSS feeds that are present on your site.
Test your site in multiple browsers and remember not everyone uses FireFox or Internet Explorer and some may not even have access to the most current version of that browser. Looking back at some of the stats on some of my other sites and they have recorded visitors that are still using Internet Explorer 5 and below.
Optimize your images and re-size them as correctly sized images which can help improve the load time and won’t overload the browser by getting it to re-size them and also add ALT tags to your images to help improve SEO.
Make sure your visitors can easily find their way around the site and back to your home page. Keep the navigation easy and consistent throughout the site and don’t let your visitors get lost and also put a link on your logo which redirects to the starting page.
The importance of copyright. Adding copyright and the year at the bottom of each of your sites pages not only notifies your visitors that the content is copyrighted but also shows that the information is up to date.
Last things…. make sure you spell check and keep yourself looking professional.
