Web designers spend lots of hours in creating an attractive and functional design. They have a tough job as their work involves editing images, laying out pages and writing pages and pages of codes. But the sad news is that their craft can easily become a victim of plagiarism. The laws are also not very clear in these cases and hence the web designers do not get adequate protection for their work. While this may seem utterly frustrating, it is the job of the Web Designers to take certain steps so that they can prevent the content theft.

Encrypt Your HTML

HTML encryption has few drawbacks as it will thwart a few uses of the HTML site like blocking the search engine spiders. However, it is still a valuable tool for protecting the code in certain situations. If you want to sell HTML templates and display them without exposing the codes to everyone then you must use encryption in these cases.

Make the Code Unique

We all know that every writer has a unique writing style and every musician has a distinct playing style. Similarly a Web Designer too must have a unique coding style. You can assign names and classes according to your own style, use comments in a liberal fashion and do everything in a style of your own. This will make it easier for you to detect any infringement of content and thereby prevent any further plagiarism.

Use Embedded Images

There are hidden meta data in images; you must use them to embed your copyright information. A major portion of the work will definitely enjoy copyright protection as long as there is some expression. The copyright data needs to be embedded into the logo, the background and other images so that it remains unique to the site.

Unique File Names

It is a known fact that plagiarists will definitely change the file names. So if you have unique files names it will become easy to prove infringement and you can even detect such an instance. You can search for unique file names for images in Google and other search engines that have the ability to look for images files.

Content Management System

A content management system or CMS is a great way to maintain a site but it does separate the template from the HTML. Anyone with a suspicious intention can easily swipe the HTML page that the CMS produces but it will be more difficult for it for a usable site.

Join a Forum

There are a number of forums and communities that deals with design theft. Pirates Sites is hugely recommended by everyone. When you visit these communities you can learn a lot about Web page design and you will also get useful tips to deal with theft cases. You can also resolve certain matters by bringing up the issue and discussing about them in these forums.

There is hardly any reason why someone would use another person’s copyrighted code to get a desired layout. The real truth is that anyone can get that desired layout if he puts in more effort in his work. There is no need to steal anyone’s idea and rip the benefits of others hard work.

I’ve seen guides like this before but haven’t read one that mentions encrypting the HTML surprisingly. One point I can add: check for blatant plagiarism of your work by using http://copyscape.com/. I’ve read a lot of people who’ve found duplicate content of their work on other sites using this service. Thanks for the article by the way.
