London – The capital city of England and the United Kingdom and with a history dating back 2 millennia when it was originally founded by the Romans and to me is a one hell of a city.
London alongside New York is the world’s largest financial centre and a leading global city. London has great influence over arts, education, entertainment, fashion finance, media, politics and culture. Soon in 2012 it will play host to the Summer Olympic games like it has done twice previously in 1908 and 1948.
London contains 4 World Heritage sites:-Royal Botanic Gardens, Greenwich which marks the Greenwich Meridian 0° longitude and GMT, Kew which comprises of Palace of West Minster, Westminster Abbey, St. Margaret’s Church, and the Tower of London.
London is a very diverse City and has a huge range of different cultures and more than 300 languages are spoken within its boundaries.
The population of London is a staggering 7,556,900 within the boundary of Greater London but a whopping 8,278,251 in the whole Greater London urban area and an estimated 12,000,000 – 14,000,000 in the metropolitan area.
London has the oldest underground railway network in the world and Heathrow airport is the world’s busiest airport.
Starting in the mid-1960s, London became a centre for the worldwide youth culture, exemplified by the Swinging London subculture associated with Carnaby Street. The role of trendsetter was revived during the punk era.
London’s architecture ranges from very old to modern and is also renowned for its art and fashion schools and makes it an international centre of fashion alongside Paris, Milan and New York. London also offers a great variety of cuisine as a result of its ethnically diverse population.
