Continuing on from our previous post Creative 80’s Music Videos here is a superb collection from the 90’s. A decade where I think the music video really came alive.

Aphex Twin – Window Licker

Love it or hate it this video by Chris Cunningham and Richard James which mocks the bling of hip-hop videos of old. The video starts with a particular lengthy intro and features a very long limo. The scary faces of Apex Twin replace the faces on the dancing ladies with and one being particularly scary and then there features champagne spraying and umbrella dancing like something straight from a Gene Kelly movie.

Da Funk – Daft Punk

Daft Punk can always be relied upon to be innovators in the music video scene. This neat video is their venture into music videos and features a talking dog with his leg in plaster carrying a ghetto blaster on the unforgiving streets of NYC.

Weezer – Buddy Holly

We are thrown straight into 1950s (70’s TV) nostalgia – Integrating the band into Arnold’s drive-in from Happy Days was a stroke of genius. I still love the bit where Fonzy is doing that cheesy, crazy Cossack style dance at the end.

Prodigy – Smack My Bitch Up

The Prodigy are one of my all-time favourite bands and this video caused quite a stir back in 1997 not with just the title of the song but the video too which managed to get itself banned from being played on MTV in the daytime. The video is shot from a POV of somebody on a raucous night out. The Prodigy also came under fire previously in 1996 for scaring young kids with the ‘Firestarter’ video. Watch out – This video has a neat twist ending as well!

Bjork – All is Full of Love

Bjork had some pretty creative and amazing music videos in the 90’s as well as wearing some pretty crazy clothes. This is one of her best to date. This video features 2 robots being constructed and falling in love. The robots look like they’ve been designed by iPod designer Jonathan Ive.

Chemical Brothers – Let Forever Be

This cool looking music video was made by Be Kind Rewind’s Michel Gondry. Check out the amazing DIY special effects which must have taken ages to perfect but Michel is truly great at creating these intricate worlds.

Coffee & TV – Blur

This has to be one of the most recognizable characters in a 90’s music video. We follow this cute little milk carton has he searches for a missing person printed on the side of him which happens to be one of the members of the band.

Beastie Boys – Sabotage

This classic video by Spike Jonze spoofing  1970’s cop dramas. With its completely over the top acting and characters names flashed up on the screen. Brilliant.

Squarepusher – Come on my Selector

I like Japanese horror movies like The Ring and The Grudge and this kind of reminds me of that. Set in an Osaka Children’s Hospital. This video again by the brilliant Chris Cunningham shows off his talent for pairing stories with electronic music.

Aphex Twin – Come to Daddy

This is just another creepy video by Aphex Twin. When I came in in the early hours and turned on MTV back in 1997 and was confronted with this I was pretty shocked. This is one hell of a scary video to watch and I wasn’t sure what was going on! Featuring a TV with some kind of demon chanting “ I want your soul” , a gang of school kids wearing masks of Aphex Twin and terrorising a housing estate in the UK. Then a crazy demon comes out of the TV and starts screaming at the old lady is pretty f@#%ed up!
